Culture
Glasgow’s Southside is home to some of the city’s internationally renowned cultural attractions, all of which are within close proximity to the hotel.
The Burrell Collection, one of Glasgow’s cultural gems, houses more than 8,000 objects and was gifted to Glasgow by the shipping magnate Sir William Burrell. The Collection includes a range of European paintings including works by Degas and Cézanne, and modern sculpture including works by Epstein and Rodin.
For architecture and design lovers, a visit to House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park is a must. Completed in 1996, this celebrated attraction was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built to his original plans. The lush surroundings of the Art Lovers’ Café is a popular venue for lunch and afternoon tea, while the Art Lover’s Gallery sells a high quality selection of Mackintosh inspired gifts and souvenirs.
To experience an array of multi-cultural performances and visual art stop off at The Tramway. With a programme of events all year round, the Tramway has something to offer everyone. The Tramway’s Hidden Gardens has established itself as one of Glasgow’s must see landmarks, winning major design and regeneration awards.
If you fancy an evening at the theatre, the Citizen’s Theatre offers a programme of productions to suit every taste, from repertory theatre to musicals and Shakespearean masterpieces.
Glasgow offers a range of other leading attractions, including: the Science Centre, which is home to a range of interactive exhibits and Scotland’s only IMAX cinema; Kelvingrove Museum & Art Galleries, the largest civic museum and art gallery in the UK housing collections of international importance; the Gallery of Modern Art, the second most visited contemporary art gallery outside London; and the Charles Rennie McIntosh inspired Glasgow School of Art, which has become renowned as one of the UK's pre-eminent institutions for the study of fine art, design and architecture.
All of Glasgow’s attractions are easily accessed by the city’s transport links, including the famous ‘Clockwork Orange’ subway system which connects the South Side and City Centre and bustling West End.

Shopping
Glasgow remains one of the UK’s best loved shopping destinations, second only to London in the range of designer and high Street options it has to offer.
Princes Square, a renovated 19th century shopping mall on Buchanan Street, offers a range of contemporary outlets such as lifestyle shop Fifi and Ally and chocolatier Kschocolat, together with international brands including Jo Malone, Reiss, Space NK and Lacoste.
The Italian Centre and surrounding Merchant City offer designer boutiques such as Armani, Cruise and All Saints and is the location of Glasgow’s first Agent Provocateur outlet.
Together with the High Street stores on offer, other shopping delights include, LK Benett, Urban Outfitters, Borders, L’Occitane and the new Apple store – the first store in Scotland. But when it comes to shopping the Southside doesn’t disappoint, offering an eclectic mix of specialist shops and boutiques.
For interiors with a difference, visit Bowerbird. The shop has a host of delights ranging from cushions and chandeliers to hand made cards and scented candles.
If you’re looking for that last-minute outfit and don’t have the time or notion to venture into the city centre, Hayes a fashion emporium made up of three stores offering a range of designer labels, including Diesel, Vivien Westwood, FCUK and Hilfiger. Hayes womenswear, menswear and kids are all adjacent to each other on Pollokshaws Road in bustling Shawlands.
Raw Vintage in Shawlands is stocked with a range of fantastic styles from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Perfect if you’re looking for something different.
A new addition to the Southside shopping experience is Silverburn, the new shopping centre situated in the Pollock area of the Southside. Silverburn offers High Street stores with traditional favourites including Marks and Spencer and Debenhams. There is plenty of free parking and the centre is easy to access by public transport.
Eating and Drinking
Dining
There are a number of different dining experiences in close proximity to the hotel.
The Battlefield Rest, a ten minute walk from the hotel, began life as a tram station and newsagent in 1915. In 1994 it was transformed into the bustling Italian restaurant that it is today. A favourite with Southsiders, the Battlefield Rest is a family friendly restaurant with a reputation for good quality food.
If you’re looking for something a bit different, Tinto won’t disappoint. Situated across the road from the Battlefield Rest, Tinto provides a range of tantalising tapas dishes. A relative newcomer to the Southside, Tinto has already proved popular with locals and visitors alike.
Shawlands, a short walk from the hotel past Queen’s Park, offers a wide range of restaurants. If you’re looking for an Italian restaurant, you’re spoilt for choice!
Spaghetti’s on Skirving Street is a lively restaurant offering a range of pizzas and pastas to suit every palate. Bella Napoli offers casual dining in its stylish café-bar, or more formal dining in the restaurant. Sit in one of the booths at the window and watch the world go by or marvel at the chefs creating their enormous 16 inch pizzas!
Shimla Pinks, situated at the corner of Queen’s Park on Pollokshaws Road is open for lunch and dinner and offers traditional Indian food in buffet and a la carte menu options. Further along Pollokshaws Road in Shawlands, Rana’s Little India is a favourite with the locals.
If you’re looking to sample a Scottish menu, The Giffnock Ivy in the nearby suburb of Giffnock provides a range of seafood and game. The lunch, pre-theatre and a la carte menus offer delights such as Loch Fyne mussels and Haggis in a Scottish Pie!
The Urban Grill in Shawlands has proved to be a favourite since it opened in late 2005. It offers all day menu for casual dining, cocktails, wines and a selection of beers. The busy bar has live piano music on Fridays and Saturdays or you can enjoy a lazy Sunday brunch with some Jazz on Sunday. Urban Grill won The List magazine’s Glasgow Newcomer of the Year Award for 2006.
Reservations are advised for all restaurants, particularly at weekends. Hotel staff will be happy to assist with this.
Drinking
If you’re looking for a lively bar or somewhere for a few quiet drinks, you’re spoilt for choice! There is a wide range of bars within walking distance of the hotel, offering something for everyone.
Up on the hill at the far side of Queen’s Park is Church on the Hill, a popular choice with locals throughout the week and at weekends. The large screens show the major sporting events and the beer garden proves particularly popular in the warmer months. Across from Church on the Hill is Agenda, which again is a busy local bar and is famous for its Thursday night quiz!
Shalwands has bars ranging from the ‘traditional’ to the more contemporary style-bar. There are far too many to mention but here is a list of some of our favourites: Corona, Linen, The Granary, Jam, Stube (2 for1 pizzas). For late night entertainment, try Waverley Tea Rooms or Tusk.
Sport and Leisure
There are a range of sport and leisure activities to take part in during your stay at the Dunkeld Hotel and No 10 Queens Drive. For the golfing enthusiast there are numerous courses nearby to choose from or if it’s a more leisurely stroll you’re after, there is a range of local parks within a close proximity.
Golf
Within a ten mile radius there are a number of golf courses to suit players of all levels. If you’re looking for a challenging round, then the parkland courses of East Renfrewshire, Williamwood and Haggs Castle, offer an exciting test of golf. The local municipal courses at Torrance House and Deacon’s Bank also offer a very enjoyable and affordable day of golf. For details of local courses speak to staff at the hotel reception.
The central location of the Dunkeld Hotel and No 10 Queens Drive makes travel to golf courses throughout Scotland very accessible. Within travelling distance by road, are the world famous courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry (1 hr 30 mins drive), Royal Troon (45 mins) and Loch Lomond (55 mins), where the Scottish Open is held annually.
Football
Scotland’s world-renowned national stadium, Hampden Park, is a short walk from the hotel. Attend a game at Hampden to experience the famous Hampden Roar, or visit the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden and walk amongst Scotland’s footballing legends, in the Hall of Fame. A walk in the park
Glasgow is Gaelic for ‘dear green place’ and the number of parks throughout the city doesn’t disappoint – there is an array of green spaces in which to enjoy a relaxing stroll or a more energetic cycle ride or jog. Visit the Glasshouse in Queens Park, directly opposite the Dunkeld Hotel and No 10 Queens Drive, to view its collection of reptiles and sub-tropical plants, get breathtaking views of the city from the viewing platform, or enjoy a game of tennis or bowls during the summer season.
Rouken Glen Park is a short ten minute drive from the hotel, which is also accessible via local transport links. The park features picturesque woodland walks, waterfall, boating pond, putting green, play area, walled garden, picnic facilities and an on-site restaurant for dinner or lunch. There is also a large garden centre providing something for every green fingered visitor. This park is ideal for families, with a range of activities to suit everyone.
Cycling
If you’re feeling more adventurous there are three individual mountain bike circuits at the nearby Pollok Country Park. Bikes can be hired at the local bike hire shop. If you’re a mountain biking enthusiast, ask hotel staff for more details.
Health and Fitness
If you feel in need of a workout during your stay there are a number of Health and Fitness Clubs nearby. Holyrood Sports Centre is only a five minute walk from the hotel. Top class facilities include open plan fitness suites, pool, extensive fitness class timetables and sports halls, which can be booked for group activities such as volleyball and badminton.
The Fitness First Health Club further down Cathcart Road has full gym facilities for a stress-busting workout and a beauty room, sauna and steam room for a more relaxing experience.
Alternatively, Greens Health and Fitness in the suburb of Giffnock provides state of the art facilities and restaurant for lunch or afternoon coffee.
